FrieslandCampina Ingredients secures Therapeutic Goods Administration approval for Biotis GOS in supplements

With Biotis, brands can create solutions targeting gut health — a growing trend in recent years

Advancing further in its expansion plans, FrieslandCampina Ingredients has announced that the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia (TGA) has added galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) to its permissible ingredients determination for listed complementary medicines in Australia. With the approval, FrieslandCampina Ingredients has been given exclusive rights to supply Biotis GOS for new supplements containing GOS for two years. This means Australian manufacturers can now create gut health supplements with FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ range of prebiotic solutions.

Unlocking the power of prebiotics

Demand for natural gut health solutions in Australia is fast-growing; 40% of Australian consumers say gut health is “extremely important” to them and 30% suffer from issues related to gut health1. As a result, emerging ingredients like prebiotics are growing in popularity, with 53% of consumers in the region already aware of prebiotics and of these, and over half (54%) understanding the digestive health support they can offer1.

FrieslandCampina Ingredients creates solutions that support gut health, promotes healthy digestion, intestinal flora balance and friendly bacteria in the gut. By using FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ prebiotic solutions, brands can create scientifically proven applications that support gut health and overall well-being to meet the demands of increasingly health-conscious consumers.

The addition of FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ Biotis GOS range to the TGA’s permissible ingredients determination includes Biotis® GOS-OP High-Purity, which has been designed specifically to enable the formulation of prebiotic supplements. This high-concentration prebiotic2 is the company’s purest prebiotic with a GOS content of over 90%, meaning that the solution is efficacious in doses as low as two grams3. With 54% of consumers preferring to consume their gut health supplements in gummy formats1, formulators can stand out in this market with trending formats that deliver both proven and sought-after health benefits.

Speaking on the launch, Sophie Zillinger Molenaar, global marketing lead for Biotis at FrieslandCampina Ingredients said: “All across the globe, consumers are taking more proactive steps to improve their digestive health – and the Australian market is no different. With consumer demand for gut health support at a high, manufacturers can now leverage our Biotis GOS-OP High-Purity to stand out in this dynamic market.”

Job van Rozendaal, Managing Director of Asia Pacific for FrieslandCampina Ingredients, added: “The news that we have received approval from the TGA means that we can help brands across Australia meet these demands with our specifically designed and easy-to-formulate prebiotic solutions. This means they can create the trending formats that consumers are looking for. It’s a hugely exciting time for FrieslandCampina Ingredients and the digestive health supplements market in Australia.”
