FrieslandCampina Ingredients expands lactoferrin production capacity

FrieslandCampina Ingredients will be increasing its lactoferrin production capacity in Veghel, the Netherlands by 60 metric tonnes in 2022 to enable strategic growth in its Early Life Nutrition and Adult Nutrition segments. This expansion will increase the company’s total lactoferrin production to 70 metric tonnes per annum.

Herman Ermens, president for FrieslandCampina Ingredients, highlighted that global demand for lactoferrin “almost doubled” between 2014 and 2019. The expansion of production capacity will allow FrieslandCampina Ingredients to meet the needs of its customers, in addition to the company’s growth through value-added ingredients, he said.

Lactoferrin is naturally present in both cow’s milk and human milk. FrieslandCampina Ingredients claimed its lactoferrin is 96% “pure” and is extracted from raw milk in its production location in Veghel. The product is spray dried, and features high consistency and enhanced dry blending properties.

The expanded production location will feature state-of-the-art technology, and will use green electricity, a contributor to FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ decreasing carbon footprint.
