Farmland in Brazil goes digital

Partnership between Farmers Edge and Nufarm Brasil will see the combination of crop protection with full-farm connectivity to deliver data-driven crop management solutions to Brazilian growers.

Brazilian crop protection company Nufarm Brasil and Farmers Edge, a digital agriculture solutions provider, have jointly announced a three-year partnership to digitise at least three million acres of farmland in Brazil by 2023. Leveraging the strengths of both companies, Farmers Edge and Nufarm will provide improved crop protection and the tools growers need for making better-informed agronomic decisions to maximise profitability.

Brazil is the fourth largest food producer in the world, with soybean, corn, sugarcane, and cotton among the top crops it produces. Amid bountiful harvests, growers face a data-sparse environment that makes it challenging to collect and access the right field-centric crop information to optimise yields in an efficient and sustainable way.

Farmers Edge brings digital infrastructure to the farm that collects data from any type of environment over wireless mesh or cellular networks. Many regions in Brazil, including the Mato Grosso, lack cellular coverage, so having full-farm connectivity powered by a “reliable” network is a game-changer, said Farmers Edge.

Celso Macedo, marketing director, Latin America, Nufarm Brasil, said: “By joining forces with Farmers Edge, Nufarm can efficiently and sustainably provide superior services and establish a seamless connection with growers so we can strategically match each farm’s needs with the right solutions.

“This partnership allows our representatives to work more closely with growers and use advanced analytics and predictive intelligence to provide specific recommendations for each field – from selecting the right crop protection products to determining the right rates to apply to each zone of a field to maximise yield potential.”

This partnership also will enable Nufarm representatives to innovate their business model and services, shifting from selling products to selling outcomes. Growers can select to share their data with their representative through the FarmCommand platform, deepening the insight and understanding of the happenings across the farms.

Wade Barnes, CEO and co-founder of Farmers Edge, concluded: “Brazil is an agriculture powerhouse with a position as a top global producer that is also data-sparse compared to other areas of the world. By developing new, integrated solutions with Nufarm, we equip growers with tools to make agronomically sound crop protection decisions, monitor crops remotely, and proactively manage risks; together, we are putting Brazil growers in the driver’s seat for the next decade.”

FarmCommand is a digital platform that is designed to help growers make better, more informed farm management decisions. Combining data, remote sensing and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven models, FarmCommand delivers a suite of tools – including a set of imagery-derived maps, predictive crop models, and automatic crop health change detection.
