Tate & Lyle Rolls Out New CLARIA® Functional Clean Label Starches
Tate & Lyle has launched its CLARIA® Functional Clean Label Starches in the Southeast Asian region. At a press briefing held during Food Ingredients Asia 2015 (FIA), Tate & Lyle’s regional management addressed the growing market trend for clean label foods, and demonstrated how the new CLARIA® line is meeting this demand.
CLARIA® Functional Clean Label Starches enable manufacturers to meet increasing consumer demand for simpler ingredient lists. Nearly 25 per cent of globally launched products were positioned as label-friendly in 2013. This trend is also strongly reflected in the Southeast Asian countries with penetration levels of up to 20 to 25 per cent for new clean label food products, and growing at over 21 per cent for the past few years.
“Tate & Lyle recognised the need for a high-performing starch with similar functionality to a chemically modified starch with all the benefits of a clean label. The growth of clean label foods is taking off dramatically across Asia and now we are able to help food-makers in the region respond to consumer demand with superior food products,” said Gerd Frank Pedersen Regional Lead, Texturants Asia Pacific SFI, speaking at the FIA.
“Although consumers demand simpler ingredient labels, taste and product experience are still primary drivers. The CLARIA® line helps provide a solution to address both of these needs.”
CLARIA® Functional Clean Label Starches outperform other clean label starches when it comes to meeting consumer expectations for taste, texture and appearance. Internal colourimetric and sensory testing demonstrated that the CLARIA® line delivers excellent smoothness and shininess and has a very neutral flavour profile and colour that is comparable to modified starches. This facilitates their incorporation in food categories that have historically had limited options with functional clean label starches.
Of particular significance is that CLARIA® has a white colour profile and does not impart dark colours on the final product. The appearance properties of CLARIA® are therefore highly beneficial in yoghurt or dairy desserts where “whiteness” is critical.
In addition to meeting high sensory standards, CLARIA® Functional Clean Label Starches enable manufacturers to formulate with similar functionality of a modified food starch. The patent-pending technology of the CLARIA® line enables tolerance to shear, heat and acid, even under extreme conditions like UHT and homogenisation. It also demonstrates high thickening efficiency and texture consistency over time.
CLARIA® Functional Clean Label Starches are versatile across a broad range of applications and sophisticated processes including soups, sauces, dressings, prepared meals and yoghurt. The full line includes three products that have different levels of process tolerance: CLARIA® Essential, CLARIA® Plus and CLARIA® Elite.
Originally launched in October 2014 in the Americas and Europe, food and beverage manufacturers across Asia can now partner with Tate & Lyle to formulate with the CLARIA® line. “We see huge potential for the Claria® line here in Asia and we have a world-class team of applications experts in our Asia laboratories eager to co-create with manufacturers to bring the next generation of cleaner label products to market with CLARIA® Functional Clean Label Starches,” said Pedersen. “With our extensive expertise in ingredient formulation, we can help customers solve their texture challenges across a wide range of applications.”
